Britain will unite around the Olympics and greet the Games as a national tonic, according to a Populus poll for The Times which suggests that the public is prepared to suspend its economic pessimism when the carnival of world sport begins this summer. Three quarters intend to get involved, either attending an event in person, watching it on television or getting together with friends in public. David Cameron uses his new year message today to declare 2012 as ?the year we must go for it? because the world will be watching Britain. The Prime Minister urged the country to capitalise on the ?extraordinary incentive? offered by the Games and to ?look outward, look onwards and to look our best?. It would be, he predicted, ?the best Olympics ever?. His enthusiasm is shared by six out of ten Britons who say they are intending to watch the Games on TV, guaranteeing a domestic audience of tens of millions. A further 6 per cent plan to watch on one of the BBC?s 22 big outdoor screens, and almost one in ten plans to attend in person after more than six million tickets were sold last year. This Friday, Olympic authorities begin their re-sale programme, when tickets initially purchased but no longer required go up for grabs. A final batch of 1.3 million tickets will go on sale in the spring. The country is pinning its hopes for British gold on Tom Daley, the 17-year-old diver from Devon, and Jessica Ennis, the 25-year old track an

Cosmetic surgeons face new rules on record keeping as ministers seek to avoid a repeat of the breast-implant health scare affecting tens of thousands of women. Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, is warming to the idea of a national register or database containing details about how many patients have undergone different procedures. He has ordered an urgent review and will meet officials tomorrow to try to establish the full facts. The safety alert took on a new urgency when Transform, the cosmetic surgery chain, told the Department of Health on Friday that 7 per cent of implants supplied by the bankrupt French firm PIP had ruptured since 2006. That contradicted the official figure of 1 per cent supplied by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the industry regulator. The department is unsure if the figure represents the whole i

David Cameron today vows to tackle City excess as he draws up battlelines for 2012 against Ed Miliband over the issue of a more responsible capitalism. The Prime Minister used his New Year?s message to herald a crackdown on executive salary hikes and big bonuses as he insisted that he would be bold about curbing society?s problems. ?While a few at the top get rewards that seem to have nothing to do with the risks they take or the effort they put in, many others are stuck on benefits, without hope or responsibility,? he said. Mr Cameron also signalled a new drive against poor standards in hospitals, saying that often they were not clean enough. And he said that there would be no let up in the drive to ensure that the Government?s welfare and school reforms are pushed to the limit. But his move on to territory already marked out by Mr Miliband suggests that

Bird flu claims first casualty in China

BEIJING: The Chinese government has confirmed a 39-year-old man's death in southern China due to bird flu, which is showing signs of resurfacing after an 18-month gap.

Authorities had earlier reported that two dead birds had tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus and ordered killing of thousands of birds in Hong Kong.

The official Xinhua news agency reported that the 39-year-old bus driver died of multiple organ failure at Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. He was admitted to a hospital last Sunday after he developed pneumonia. He tested positive for bird flu over the next few days.

The victim had not travelled outside Shenzhen in the past few months. The incident had triggered panic in Shenzhen after reports that he had come in contact with nearly 120 people.

LeBron James Hits Dwyane Wade For Game-Winning Alley-Oop (VIDEO)

LeBron James capped off his 26th birthday in style last night.

The star made a brilliant inbounds pass to a streaking Dwyane Wade, who converted an alley-oop lay-up in the closing seconds to lift the Miami Heat to 4-0 Friday.

The visiting Heat needed this improbable ending to get the job done, but thanks to James and Wade, they outlasted the scrappy Minnesota Timberwolves, 103-101.

Lame Heat intro video aside, Miami may live up to the hype this year ...

Plekanec's ice time has dwindled under new Canadiens coach

SUNRISE, Florida ? Tomas Plekanec is the Montreal Canadiens' leading scorer for the third consecutive season.

But as the team prepared to face the Florida Panthers on Saturday, the hard-working Czech finds himself as a third-line centre, spending less time on ice as head coach Randy Cunneyworth attempts to balance his offensive lines and their workloads.

?He?s done some very good work in a lot of different roles,? Cunneyworth said Friday, after the Canadiens went through a short, intense practice at the Panthers? facility. ?On the penalty kill, he?s been excellent, and again we?ve tried to focus on that part of his game to be the basis of the good work, but he knows he can bring a little more offence and intensity to his game.

?He?s working hard. We have other guys out there, so he doesn?t have to feel he has to take it all upon his shoulders.?

Plekanec leads all Canadiens forwards in ice time, averaging nearly 21 minutes a game. He is accustomed to being used on a top line and on both special teams.

But he has seen his ice time cut back since Cunneyworth replaced Jacques Martin behind the bench. Plekanec played 17:51 in the win over Ottawa on Tuesday and a season-low 17:20 Thursday night in Tampa.

Part of Cunneyworth?s rationale is to keep his players fresh, but he?s also trying to find some chemistry among his forwards.

Michael Cammalleri had been struggling on a line with Plekanec and went 10 games without a goal. He has now scored in each of the past two games while playing with David Desharnais.

The coach has also tried to give second-year centre Lars Eller a boost by putting him between the team?s top goal-scorers, Erik Cole and Max Pacioretty.

Plekanec?s new playmates are the streaky Andrei Kostitsyn and hard-working Travis Moen. The latter has eight goals this season, the fourth-highest total on the team, but has only one assist in his last 12 games.

Plekanec, who has a cap hit of $5 million US, has been minus-8 in the last seven games and is minus-10 for the season. That?s unfamiliar territory for a player who was a career plus-33 coming into this season.

?I?m playing what I?m asked to do and I try to do my best,? Plekanec said. ?If it?s the first, second, third or fourth line, it?s all up to coach to decide that. I?m not the type of guy who?s going to go to him and ask why this is happening. I want to play better, and that?s the main thing for myself.

?I know through the years when I?m not playing well, and I know I have to be better,? Plekanec said. ?You have ups and downs as a player. You need to fight through it, work hard and play better. I had a good start and then I slowed down a bit, but being a veteran, I have to be better. We?re in a tough spot fighting for the playoffs and we need the veterans to produce.?

Plekanec admitted confidence could be a factor.

?I don?t question my work ethic,? he said. ?I had a good chance (Thursday night against Tampa Bay) in the first period, and maybe if I score there I get some confidence.?

Cunneyworth said the recent line changes are a work in progress.

?We?re still creating chemistry,? he said. ?We did a lot of good things and we?ll get better. We have guys who are making new alliances on the lines and that?s very important.?

Cunneyworth said Friday?s practice offered an antidote to the disappointment that followed the 4-3 loss in Tampa.

?(It was) short and hard,? he explained. ?Obviously, we?re in a similar boat as the other day in seeing what the guys need on a daily basis and we know they?re tired and sore after a game, but they feel better after an intense but short workout.

?We?re disappointed, but it was good (practice) to prepare to play a good team that?s been going well at home. We have to stay sharp. We have to put some effort into it, push the body a little.?

The coach doesn?t expect any lineup changes against the Panthers, which means Chris Campoli and Yannick Weber will be healthy scratches and Carey Price gets the start in goal.
