Tips to Improve Indoor Lighting - Declutter Your Home

Achieving the perfect lighting in your home can be tricky. If you build it, you have to plan for everything. Are there tall trees next to the main bedrooms? Where does the sun rise and set? Will it heat the house in the summer or will the house be dark in winter? If you move in, what do you do to strengthen what you have? Not enough outlets. Only overhead lighting. The problems may feel countless but there are solutions that are within your reach. Here are some tips on how to improve indoor lighting at whatever stage your house is in:

  • Keep it soft. Rarely do you actually want direct light. In the bathroom, direct light can actually be offensive to your eyes. Using ultra-soft lighting can add appeal to your home without too many changes. Using frosted bulbs in kitchen lights that hang above an island can create a warm feeling without glaring reflecting off surfaces.?
  • Wall sconces provide warm accent lighting and look great around bathroom mirrors or in dark hallways. Adding wall sconces to the wall above a fireplace can bring soft light near this focal point without the need for an actual fire. Wall lighting tends to bring more diffused light into a room. Diffused light is perceived by the human eye as warm and inviting. Overhead lighting is perceived as cold and sterile.
  • Reading light is very specific and it can be hard to achieve in the room you want to sit in to read. Most lights we use to read by are placed to the side, which creates a glare, or worse, shadows. This isn?t helpful when you?re trying to read at night because it causes eye strain. Place a light source directly behind where you want to read, than place a secondary lamp directly at a right angle, this will help eliminate any glare on the page and reduce shadows.
  • Pendant lights can give you focused lightening in kitchens or dining rooms where most families would like to have a brighter light source. Still, if you want to cut down on the glare use opaque shades or lower wattage light bulbs. If you really want to be able to control the mood of these rooms, put these lights on a dimmer switch.
  • Television lighting can be tricky because some people enjoy watching a film in complete darkness, and others like to keep every light on in the living room. A great compromise that saves your eyes is to place a light to the side of the TV set. This gives your eyes a counterbalance and lessens the glare.
